To me, a crannóg represents a place of safety. In Lucan, Co. Dublin, I have a purpose built consulting room, discreetly at the side of my home, where I provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere which my clients find to be a very peaceful place. The image of the crannóg embodies the secure base which I aim to provide.
Crannógs were fortified lake dwellings (3,000BC– 900AD) on man-made islands formed by piling oak uprights into a lake bed to create a circular retaining wall. The platform of the ‘island’ was created with stone and clay and the crannóg, a round wooden/mud hut with straw roof, was built on top of this.
